Fine craftsmanship, antique restoration, special decorative finishes
InStudio Decorative Art and Design is based in Auckland, New Zealand, and specialises in
applications, as well as a wide range of faux finishes, marbling, glazing and custom paint finishes
for interior or exterior surfaces.
Johan van Westen of InStudio combines a contemporary approach to interior design and applied
ornamentation using predominantly traditional handmade techniques and materials.
He has had over 30 years experience in the field of decorative arts and design in the Netherlands
and New Zealand.
Professionally trained in the Netherlands, Johan worked as a decorative artist for Queen Beatrix
on the Royal Palace restoration project.
His New Zealand projects have included Auckland’s Metropolis Hotel, Sky City Casino and
Vero Building, as well as Dunedin’s Southern Cross Casino, Queenstown’s Millennium Hotel
and a number of offices, residences and super yachts in Auckland.
Johan was also a senior lecturer on a design programme at Unitec in Auckland for six years.
He and his wife Annelies owned the Van Westen Antique Studio in Newmarket, Auckland,
for several years, selling fine antiques and providing an antique restoration service.
In addition to Johan’s work with architects, designers and homeowners, he designs and produces
Johan also passes on his specialised knowledge and skills to the public via his classes.
